Ideas for English Language Development
Are you looking for ways to help your student improve their English? Read below for some ideas.
Read, read, and read some more! Children learn so much from reading good examples of writing. Please encourage your children to read. Start from something that the kids would enjoy according to their individual interests. Please consider using the great resources that we have in the MHS library. I'm sure that most students didn't read the entire list of summer reading books, so encourage them to continue checking off that list (here's the link to the list:http://www.smic-school.cn/ez/?ListID=69&DepID=118Click on Recommended Reading for the full list) . Also, I highly recommend the Time For Kids magazine. Please visit this website for more details: http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/kids
Write, write, and write some more! Have your children keep a journal, and ask them to always write in complete sentences. Encourage them to use a new word in each journal entry. You could even have them keep a pocket-notebook to record their own favorite quotations from things that they read and hear. Another thing that you could do is ask them to write a family letter to a grandparent/other relatives periodically. Or, you could ask them to write a letter to you every month about how they’ve been doing and feeling about anything that’s happened in their daily life over the past month. This might also give you an opportunity to know a little more about your children while providing them with an alternative way of communicating their thoughts to you. There are always certain things that we prefer being communicated in writing rather than face-to-face.
- For English speaking and listening comprehension: Please try to speak English as much as possible at home. Or, set a day as English day – everyone in the family speaks only in English on that certain day of the week. Let your children see that you are willing to make this much effort to help them. You could also choose good English movies on DVDs for your children/family to watch. Please make sure that only English subtitles are allowed.
